Department of Economics

The department of Economics originally was a single-man department as student strength was negligible in 1983. The founder teacher of the department was Dr. Swabera Islam who retired as Head of the Department in 2012. Dr. Jayashree Dam Paul Choudhury continued to hold the post of Head of the Department till her retirement in 2019. The department takes the pleasure of acknowledging the services of Mr. Diluwar Haque, Mr. Pradyut Guha, Mr. Rafiq Ahmed, Ms. Rupali Talukdar, Ms. Nitumoni Borah, Ms. Smita Lahkar, Mr.Rejaul Haque for their contribution to the department.

From the academic session 2020-2021, the department got permission from Gauhati University to start BA (Hons.) course in Economics and B.Sc (Regular) course with the subject combination Economics-Mathematics-Statistics. Presently, there are five faculty members serving the department with the student strength of 300 (H.S), and around 700 (including Honors & General) at UG level. Apart from Economics, the department has also taught the subject “Environmental Studies” both at H.S as well as Degree level. The department has been publishing a monthly Newsletter “ECONSCIENCE” (where academic contributions are made by the students only) since September, 2022 onwards while it maintains a departmental library also that benefit both faculties and students as well.

The department has consistently shown good results over the years, especially in H.S. from 2010 onwards. For degree students also, there is a positive outcome and it is expected that in the near future there will be an overall improvement as faculty members are committed to giving their best service towards the growth of the department.
